40 x individual lesson plans in 10 lesson blocks (based around a 10 week term) make up the full years worth of piano lesson plans. Each lesson plan follows on from the last, containing revision, learning material, instruction for teachers on exactly what to say and what to play, progressing in complexity as they move forward. Lesson 10 of each term is an exam with a written (theory) portion and a performance (pieces learned during that term) portion.
Our piano curriculum starts with learning the piano keys, learning pieces of music that use these notes and introduces theory (notes on the stave, sharps, flats, etc.) that allow students to understand all notes on the keyboard. With that understanding we then look at chord theory, which individual notes from scales make up chords and move on to pieces of music played with chords. The complexity of the pieces and the theory increase in a carefully paced and structured progression.
Teaching instruction, sheet music, learning material and audio players are all contained withing the lesson plan so teachers simply need open the lesson plan that each student is up (to on a screen that both they and the student can see) and conduct each lesson.
Overview:
Level 1: We start with the basics, keys, playing position, and move through the term learning note lengths, notes on the treble stave and three pieces of music that use the notes and theory covered (plus lesson 10 exam on theory and pieces covered).
Level 2: We continue with revising and practising all past songs and theory (to ensure we build our repertoire), delve deeper into theory e.g. dotted minims, ties, etc., notes on the bass stave and add left hand accompaniment to learnt pieces of music (plus lesson 10 exam on theory and pieces covered).
Level 3: We continue with revising and practising all past songs and theory (to ensure we build our repertoire), delve deeper into theory e.g. quavers, sharps, flats, etc., sight reading music, scales and a more complex piece of music that use the notes and theory covered (plus lesson 10 exam on theory and pieces covered).
Level 4: We continue with revising and practising all past songs and theory (to ensure we build our repertoire), delve deeper into theory e.g. repeat symbols, sight reading music, learn chords and two more complex pieces of music that use the notes, chords and theory covered (plus lesson 10 exam on theory and pieces covered).
